I finally entered an Iron Coder! The theme this year was “Conspiracy” and the API was “iPhone”. Which is a little funny considering there is no real API for the iPhone.

Basically what I did was write a little cocoa app that lives up in your menu bar and takes a shot with the iSight ever 5 minutes.

The reasoning being that if you are the victim of conspiracy the best way to uncover it all is to set up this “nanny cam” type thing. Basically the built in web server serves up an iPhone specific web page with all the images on it. Check it out:

SpiPhone

Just run it, make sure your isight’s plugged in, and then go to http://localhost:9138/ and test it out.

If you want to check out how I wrote it (it isn’t anything super special), the source is here.

I unfortunately didn’t win (my presentation lacked flash and generally sucked), but I did get 4 votes and I didn’t even vote for myself…

By the way, C4[1] was amazing. I will blog about it shortly.

So I was minding my business the other day strapping some babies to roombas (more on that another time), when all of a sudden a twitter popped up…

Hm, that is an interesting twitter (sorry to hear that Daniel). I was supposed to find out if I got my student scholarship to WWDC that I applied for at around this time. I went to #macsb and asked Daniel why he would say something like that. He said that a friend had told him he had gotten his acceptance email earlier that day. But wait a second. All my email goes to gmail and:

Ok, at this point I’m a little scared. What if I don’t get this scholarship? Did I screw up the application? Did I accidentally type “screw your mother” into one of the application answers (the “screw your mother” key is so close to the “t” key). Ok, at this point I started to calm down. Gmail probably just didn’t check my other mail over POP yet.

Two days?? Man, that is stupid. I manually checked the mail and waited for a very long time for Google to chew threw the 141 emails I got in the 2 days. It was only a few minutes before an email from ADC popped up…but it felt like an hour…

Oh thank god.

Oh man. WWDC is amazing. How to begin…

First off, I’m learning so much. Every session I go to gets me so excited about the future of the Mac platform. They are taking it the the absolute right direction. The tools they are giving us are going to put this great power right at our fingertips to just make amazing applications. One thing that is going to really change the way a lot of us do things is Core Animation. This is a great little framework that is going to allow for some beautiful interface elements. I personally can’t wait until we are in a Leopard only environment.

Last night was Stump The Experts. Let me say that this was an absolute blast. The basic format is there is a panel of “experts” (usually past or present Apple employees) and they ask questions of the audience and get questions asked of them from the audience. Answers answered correctly get points. Of course it isn’t exactly a structured game show, so there is a lot of room for fun along the way. My hostel roommate “stumped” the experts by asking how Viennese people joyfully say “I have an apple!”. Next year I will have a dizzying battery of questions and will not only stump, they will mystify.

San Francisco is great city. It is beautiful and there is a huge range of people here. I am meeting so many neat people at my hostel. Chad was from Australia and has been on a 7 week tour of the US by jumping from city to city. He gets great satisfaction from shooting Kangaroos. I instructed him to shoot one for me. My roommate goes to a technical university in Vienna and a couple other attendees I know are from Norway. This is truly a multi-culteral affair. As I write this, the man next to me is speaking a language I really have never heard before.

I have taken some pictures and I will try to post them somewhere and update this to link to them. I have to go now because my next session is starting soon. I can tell you this right now though. I am coming back next year.

And I can’t seem to wipe the smile from my face.
Yep. I get to go to WWDC! I spent a BUNCH of time on that application so it is really satisfying that I got it. I really tried to convey how important this was to me and it was pretty convincing. I don’t think it 100% reflected how important it is to me though. At least it was enough to get me there and that is all that matters. Now to worry my ass off about flight and hotel…

Sidenote: Speaking of going to California, I’m doing just that tomorrow morning. We are doing the final (knock on wood) tests of the rover I’ve been helping out with. The tests are out in the desert (fun!), so that should be extremely hot.

NHS has WON the 2005 National Botball Tournament in Jacksonville, FL!! They scored 80 points on their first seeding round because of a judge’s error. They next round they scored the highest score ever to be scored in botball…an astounding 164 points! No one could match it all day. In double elimination, they played some amazing rounds and were undefeated going into the final head to head match. NHS’s robot messed up and missed its target by millimeters, sealing the victory for the other team. Having one loss each meant that the winner of the next match would become the 2005 champions. They light came on and the arm that John designed slipped over the highest scoring object on the field, botguy. Perfect! It then brought it back but….disaster! In the middle of the motion, a piece broke off and the entire arm fell over! This pushed botguy off of the table, making it score 0! Luckily, the arm got the ball(30 points) and “Gibby” a few trash (3 points). The final score was 27 to 33…NHS! These guys did an amazing job on this robot. They spent the night before the competition at the beach. Entirely unlike all the other botball teams, which were working franticly on untested designs. Great job guys!
